What Anthropic announced
Anthropic published its approach after signing the EU AI Act Article 50(2) Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content as a provider of generative AI models and systems.
New covered Claude models support machine-readable marking from launch. Anthropic is also working to add support to models released before the relevant August 2026 date.
Why marking was introduced
Anthropic presents marking as a way to give people useful context about the origin and processing history of AI-generated content. The plan also addresses its transparency commitments and legal obligations.
The mark is not described as an enforcement verdict or authorship certificate. It contributes one signal that must be interpreted alongside the content’s history and use.
AI transparency context
Machine-readable marking can help platforms, researchers, publishers, and users identify supported provenance information at scale. It may be more portable than an interface-only label.
Portability also creates limits: content can be transformed, separated from metadata, or mixed with other material. Anthropic’s guidance explicitly warns against treating detection as fully conclusive.
Claude text marking
For text, Anthropic says a supported Claude model weaves an imperceptible watermark into the response. It is designed not to change meaning, quality, or readability.
The text mark travels when content is copied and pasted and may survive some editing. The company has not publicly described how the mark is encoded.
File marking and C2PA
For supported file types, including examples such as SVG, PNG, and JPG, Anthropic says Claude attaches signed provenance metadata using the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity open standard.
A valid signed label can indicate that Claude processed the file and help identify tampering. Platform support varies, and metadata can be removed through conversion, re-saving, or screenshots.
Supported model rollout
Claude models launched in the EU on or after August 2, 2026 support marking at launch, according to Anthropic. Models launched earlier are covered by a transition period while support is added.
For supported models, marking applies worldwide wherever Claude is offered and across listed Anthropic products and cloud partners, subject to feature and platform support for each marking type.
Detection
Anthropic says it will help users and third parties detect embedded text watermarks and file provenance metadata. Technical details are still forthcoming in the currently cited documentation.
Until those details exist, independent sites cannot validate an official Claude detector. This site does not infer marking from tone, vocabulary, or formatting.
Known limitations
A detected mark indicates content may have been processed by Claude; it does not prove Claude created the source ideas. Conversely, failure to detect a mark does not rule out Claude or another AI system.
Older models, unsupported contexts, heavy editing, translation, mixed writing, short passages, and stripped file metadata can all affect whether a mark is detectable.
Current timeline and status
The marking commitment applies to new Claude models launched from August 2, 2026 under the conditions Anthropic describes. Work on earlier models and public detection support is ongoing.
